Afrobeats360 Artiste Of The Week: Omah Lay

This year 2020 did all it could to alter the cause of our lives (definitely not the vision 2020 of our dreams); but one thing it sure didn’t do is stop us from discovering new artists and new music. As a matter of fact, we don’t think we’ve enjoyed such voluminous and diverse music from newbies in a long while like this year.
Speaking of newbies, our artist of the week– fast rising singer Omah Lay, is one of such newbies. Announcing himself to the industry with a solid body of work that is an ‘all hits no miss’, this Port Harcourt born singer immediately beamed the spotlight on himself with his type of music and it has remained on him for the most part of the year.
Barely three years old in the music industry as a singer, and he is enjoying the massive streaming of his music across all digital platforms. He has already bagged collaborations with some of the greatest names in the game, as well as the International acceptance of his sound. And we hear he’s just getting started as he’s all set to release another body of work.
Wow! Tell Omah Lay that we are waiting patiently and will be with him every step of the way as he keeps climbing to the top.

Omah Lay’s Musical Journey

In the city of Port Harcourt, Marine base to be precise, Stanley Omah Dida a teenager who took on the stage name ‘Lil King’ made it known to everyone around him that he’s a rap star. But as time went on, and he started getting a sense of purpose, he got bored of spitting bars and decided to try other aspects of music instead. This teenager coined a new name for himself –Omah Lay and channelled his energy into producing music for people rather than make his own music.

As a producer, Omah Lay helped several artists in the hood write and produce songs that became instant hits in the hood, but a lot of these artists never acknowledged him nor gave him credits for the role he played in making these songs successful.
Frustrated by the lack of acknowledgement, Omah Lay decided to give singing a shot. In 2019, he wrote and produced two singles ‘Brother’ and ‘Do not disturb’ which gained massive radio plays in the city of Port Harcourt, drew the attention of several record labels to him in and outside the city and eventually got him signed to ‘KeyQaad’ an Indie record company based in Lagos.

Omah Lay released his official single ‘You’ under the KeyQaad imprint on the 14th of February 2020. This song slowly but surely found its way to the top of music charts and playlists of music lovers and a lot of people started to pay attention. And when he put up a snippet with a verse he had recorded on instagram, the feedback was amazing, so he decided to make the song available for free as teaser to another single, that song became ‘Bad Influence’ which went on to garner millions of streams on digital stores. On the 22nd of May, the budding artist released his debut EP which included the previously released ‘You’ and ‘Bad Influence’.This EP became an instant commercial success and immediately joined Burnaboy’s African Giant and fireboy’s Laughter Tears and Goosebumps on the most streamed Afrobeat albums on digital stores like Audiomack, Deezer and Apple Music. Therefore solidifying his place in the industry and clearing doubts of music critics who considered him a fluke.
Since making an appearance on the music scene, young Omah Lay has gone on to become Apple Music Favorite New Artiste of The Month of June in Africa. On June 7, Omah Lay was interviewed on the then new Apple Music’s Africa, now Radio by Cuppy where he spoke about the success of his new EP and music influences. On the 3rd of July, he was picked as the debut star for Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign which spots a talent in Africa and projects them all through the continent and internationally. And most recently, he became BET’s amplified international artist for the month of November.

Omah Lay has also featured on tracks that became hits with the likes of Olamide and Wizkid. His song with Olamide– infinity is the biggest song in the country at the moment. We guess at this point it’s safe to say that anything Omah lay touches turns to gold. Or as Olamide baddo rightly puts it ‘every single is a hit’.Cover art to soon to be released Ep–What Have We Done
