If there’s one artiste that has been living true to his name in the industry, it’s definitely Adedamola Adefolahan whose stage name is Fireboy Dml.
Ever since the young YBNL signee stepped into the game, he has not failed to bring the fire that is in his name to every track.
From his breakthrough single, ‘Jealous’, his debut album ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’ which is arguably one of the best albums in recent times, to his most recent banger ‘Eli’, Fireboy, has been on fire!!!
Name: Adedamola Adefolahan

Years Active: 2018- Till Date

Born and christened Adedamola Adefolahan, Fireboy DML grew up in Abeokuta and was a member of his local church choir. His interest in music increased in his second year while studying at Obafemi Awolowo University.
Although his parents thought and made plans for him to further his education oversees and maybe eventually become a professor in English someday, Fireboy had other plans for himself.
“I’m not happy about it” were the exact words of his father, when Fireboy broke the news of his intended music career to his father.
With the aim of succeeding in the Music Industry as an Independent artiste, Fireboy moved from Abeokuta to Lagos and started as a songwriter whilst still recording his own songs underground.
He registered for the ‘Cool FM’ Aux session- a platform that caters for Afrobeats artists with a distinct sound.
He performed his incredibly written song ‘I’ll be fine’ during an episode of the show and this caught the attention of the YBNL Boss, Olamide who immediately reached out to him via social media.
Fireboy got signed to YBNL Nation in 2018, and his hit track ‘Jealous’ and ‘I’ll be Fine’ were featured on the Ybnl Mafia Family album released that same year.
Jealous which was later released again as fireboy’s official single became the breakthrough song that immediately shot the singer to limelight.
To convince Afrobeats listeners that he isn’t a fluke, on 14 June, 2019, the singer released the single “What If I Say”. This single was produced by Pheelz, who employed a mix of percussion, chillout synth harmonies, and a drum riff in the production.
Fireboy DML released the single “King” as a follow-up to his previously released singles ‘Jealous’ and ‘What if I say’.
Although the singles ‘What if I Say’ and ‘King’ weren’t so much of a hit like ‘Jealous’, they still were enough conviction for Afrobeats listeners to know that his fire was just starting to burn.
Laughter Tears And Goosebumps Debut Album
Fireboy released his debut studio album ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’ (LTG) on 29th November, 2019. And just as petrol is to fire, so is this album to fireboy’s musical career. All songs were hit! No miss. The album also spread like wlidfire to Afrobeats music charts and playlists.
Within the space of three days of its release, it amassed over 6 million streams on Spotify alone.
The album’s is a blend of R&B that combines love and social issues with impeccable songwriting. LTG comprises of 13 tracks and doesn’t feature any guest artist. LTG was supported by the previously released singles “Jealous”, “What If I Say” and “King”. It received positive reviews from music critics, generally. Many have even compared it to Wizkid’s ‘Superstar’ album. Just so you know how good an album it is.
Awards And Achievements
The fast rising singer and songwriter has been getting awards, nominations and honorable mentions for his harwork since he came on board. He was nominated in three categories- ‘Next Rated’, ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Viewers Choice’ in the 2019 Headies Award ceremony. That same year, he won ‘The Most Promising Act Of The Year’ and was nominated in ‘Best New Act’ and ‘Revelation of the Year’ category at the City People Music Awards. And in 2020, he won the ‘Listeners Choice’ Awards along with two other nominations at Soundcity MVP Awards Festival.
Life After Laughter Tears And Goosebumps Album Release
Fireboy who is very keen on not being ‘put in a box’, takes pride in letting everyone know that his genre of music is “Afro-life”- a fuision of the different genres of music with Afrobeats. Among other things, this is what makes him unique and stand out from his contemporaries.
However, many music critics disagree with this and prefer to tag him an Afro R&B artiste because most of his songs lean towards that genre, and there is no such thing as ‘Afro-life’. But doesn’t he have the right to come up with his own sphere?
Riding on the success of LTG, the singer hasn’t been under pressure to release any song. So far, excluding his feature on Reminsice’s single ‘Ogaranya’, he has only put out two songs this year- ‘New York City Girl’ and ‘Eli.’
The song Eli is another statement from the singer to better explain his self originated music genre – Afro-life. It is inspired and built on old Asian soundtracks with soothing guitar rhythm to go with it.
Undoubtedly, the song still comes out as an undeniable hit. Only Fireboy can do it this way.
Check out the video for ‘Eli’
Fireboy’s ability to experiment with other sounds and genres of music whilst making it appealing and irresistible to Afrobeats listeners is why he deserves to be Afrobeats360 artiste for this week.
In between, we hear that Eli is a single on his soon to be released sophomore album titled ‘Apollo’.
Definitely, we are in for another type of fire!!!
Congratulations Fireboy! On being Afrobeats360 artiste for this week.
Keep The Fire Burning
