The Future of Afrobeats
He came in to the sphere making a type of music that is alien to many listeners and lovers of Afrobeats which was immediately tagged “Indian music.” In a jiffy, he began to blend Afrobeats with Afrotrap songs, nevertheless, still appearing on top charts and winning awards.
Rema is indeed an artiste who hasn’t come to play, as he constantly makes huge strides within the Nigerian Music Industry, and the International sphere at large. From being mentioned as a favorite of top International figures, to currently appearing on billboards in New York and Los Angeles. Let’s not forget to mention his very recent BET nomination, and all these within a short period of two years in the music industry.
If you decide to call him the superhero of Afrobeats you won’t be wrong, because, not only is he referred to as the ‘Iron Man’ /’Spiderman’, his music career is accelerating at a speed that only superheros like the flash in DC comics can attain. Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the Bad Commando as Afrobeats360 Artiste for this week!

Rema started singing and rapping while in secondary school. In 2013, he and his friend Alpha P, formed a group called RnA. The group’s name is obviously a combination of the first letters of their stage names. RnA won season 2 of Pikolo’s Dream Alive talent show. They signed a record deal with Peak Entertainment shortly afterwards and released their debut single “Mercy”. The mid-tempo song was recorded at Dream Alive Studio in Benin City. The music video for “Mercy” was directed by Whyte House Pictures. In all, the group gained minor exposure following their performance at the Glo Slide and Bounce concert series in Benin and Lagos respectively.
Getting Signed To Jonzing World/Mavin Record
In 2018, Rema posted a freestyle to D’Prince’s track “Gucci Gang” on social media. The post caught the attention of D’Prince who flew him to Lagos to offer a record deal. Rema signed a record deal with D’Prince’s Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records in 2019. According to the words of D’Prince:
, “When I first heard Rema’s work I knew this was an artist I wanted the entire world to listen to. His talent and artistry are so far beyond his years.”
Projects, Awards And Achievements
Later on in 2019, the ‘Lady’ hit maker released his self-titled debut EP ‘Rema‘ which peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria, and Bad commando EP. The lead single “Iron Man” of his self titled EP, was one of the songs that appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist. The song ‘Dumebi’ which is also one of the tracks on the self-named EP became a national anthem for the rest of the year and by the end of the year, Rema won the Next rated artiste category award at the 2019 Headies award event. During his acceptance speech, he made it clear that he’s the future of Afrobeats. Hmmm
Starting the new year 2020 on a high, on 12th January, 2020, Rema received the Souncity mvp for ‘Best New Artist. A month after, false news of his death spread like wildfire over the internet as hackers took over his Wikipedia and posted about his death. On 15 June 2020, Rema was nominated as ‘Best Viewers Choice: International Act’ on the 2020 BET Awards. He was nominated on the awards alongside Burna Boy and Wizkid. They were the only Nigerian Artistes nominated for the awards edition of 2020.
He also got featured on a billboard in Times Square in New York, United States of America for his smash single Ginger me and was also made the face of Apple Music on a billboard in Los Angeles.
The Lady hit maker recently put out three back to back singles(Ginger me, Alien and Woman) which are fast finding their way to the top of majority charts and playlists of Afrobeats. This is no doubt a prove that the singer is still in the business of making hits and he isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Afrobeats360 wishes Rema all the very best in his music journey! We also look forward to seeing him enjoy Godspeed now and always.
