You won’t be wrong if you call him a LEGEND. However, for someone who doesn’t just go with the flow, but is the flow himself. For someone whose word play is no joke! It’s quite difficult to find the best word to describe him. Well, it’s just best we call him who he is- Vector Tha Viper!
Olanrewaju Ogunmefun popularly known as Vector Tha Viper is a multi-award-winning Nigerian Rap Artist known for such musical hits like “King Kong”, “Angeli” and “Comfort”.
Since the release of his first single “Kilode” for the album “State of Surprise” in 2010, Vector has continued to blaze a trail in the Nigerian music scene, and has forged a reputation for being a Master Wordsmith and Hip-Hop lyricist.
I had the pleasure of asking him a couple of questions for Afrobeats360 to gain an insight into the mind of the man from Lafiaji, and the answers are most intriguing.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LAFIAJI FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW? You have always been associated with lafiaji in your music, what is the significance of the word?
Lafiaji is the place I grew up on Lagos island.
It is arguably where I am coming from.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO SNACK?
Vector: Depends on what I feel like to be honest. These days it’s Fox Cookies, a short while ago it’s Chin-Chin and Donkwa from King George V road. I buy them in a huge bunch and stock.
CAN YOU COOK TO SAVE THE DAY OR IS MAKING NOODLES THE EXTENT OF YOUR CULINARY TALENT?
I can actually cook good food. Lol.
WHICH EVENT DID YOU PERFORM AT THAT HAS LEFT YOU WITH YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES AND WHY?
I actually can’t say as I have a lot of fond memories in performance… a lot.
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT FOR YOU TO REMEMBER THE LYRICS TO A SONG YOU WROTE AT LEAST FIVE YEARS AGO?
Five years ago, is not too far compared to some songs I remember the lyrics to that were made ten years ago. I have memory of verses I made 15-18yrs ago.
WHAT CONVINCED YOU TO RESOLVE ISSUES WITH M.I. ABAGA AND WOULD 23-YEAR-OLD VECTOR HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PUT ASIDE THE BEEF AS EASILY AS YOU SEEMED TO HAVE DONE?
I barely hold a grudge but I don’t hide my stance. The day we see face to face Again, I go clear am well. Na man him be.
HOW HAS THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY?
It’s just creates more family time for me to be honest. Music is life everlasting so…………… we dey.
It has also shown me that we as Nigerians have let a lot of flimsy excuses about Nigeria, and ruin our voice of reason and development. We haven’t necessarily asked the right thing of and from the politicians. A lot of us have been selfish with our thoughts for a long time….. we have only thought about our individual survival which is understandable but so far, not so good.
IS THERE A MRS. VECTOR ON THE HORIZON?
Lol. I don’t know of a female rapper coming up by that name but, you will find out when it’s time.
IS THERE ANY YOUNG ARTIST YOU ARE GROOMING THAT WE SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR?
Not right now.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO SHOOT YOUR FIRST MUSIC VIDEO AND WHICH ONE IT WAS
It was kilode featuring Emmsong. The only thing I can tell you is, the new feeling of acting and performance was new… had to adjust a bit.
WHAT DO YOU THINK NEEDS TO IMPROVE ABOUT THE NIGERIAN MUSIC SCENE?
The value levels. I think more value can be placed on art and the act performing the art.
WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING ARTIST YOU HAVE WORKED WITH AND WHY?
All the artists I have worked with are unique in their own way. I don’t remember comparing them against each other in thought as they are different people with unique characters.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE SONG “COMFORT” FT DAVIDO, AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE FROM YOUR FANS SINCE THE VIDEO DROPPED?
We just set up and vibed till we got what we thought was the right sound. As for response, it’s been very good.
WHAT IS YOUR LATEST MUSIC PROJECT ALL ABOUT?
Vibes Before Teslim Which is a project on “THE JOURNEY OF SELF DISCOVERY”.
It emphasizes the importance of self-understanding and the growth. However, we have a joint project with Masterkraft scheduled for a 22nd of May release date titled #CROSSROADS (#CROSSROADSEP) that further highlights the value in recognizing that as much as we are always discovering new ways about man, we must be aware to look out for the little moments of decisions that cross us over from one state into another. We must observe marker points of our development in music and generally in life.
WHAT’S NEXT NOW FOR VECTOR IN 2020?
It’s a new definition approach to Rap in the world. We are creating our new path of advancement. It’s an establishment of everything that makes us who we are as musicians. I give ultimate respect and appreciation to the Abami Eda himself, Fela for the genius idea to establish his own style of music with core African spirit and mind. We agree that we are educated, we also agree that we don’t know everything (making us illiterate to some concepts). However, what we do know is, we are the age of Nigerians who has accepted our hybrid nature and forged ahead with it. It Africa’s children with exposure beyond the shores of Africa… it is RAPFROBEAT.
