Certain artistes have dedicated their time, energy and abilities to leave their “marks” in the Nigerian Rap Industry and this hasn’t gone unrewarded. Time has a way of paying back, and life in totality has the rulers and shakers in every sphere. With this, we have highlighted top Rap artistes in Nigeria who have stood the test of time, and have become Champs in the rap industry:

1. Olamide:


Olamide Baddo whose biological name is Olamide Adedeji is a Nigerian hip hop recording artiste who is very good in dishing out lyrics in his local dialect,Yoruba.

He decided to pursue his musical career because he found out that he was gifted in it, so he had to explore. According to the artiste,

“It’s my life, my hustle, my world.” In the year 2010, Olamide released ‘Eni Duro’ under the Coded Tunes record label where he was signed into at that time. I remembered then in school, my friend and I will cram the lyrics to enable us rap along. The song instantly made Olamide get to stardom!

The YBNL Boss has composed studio albums like Rapsodi(2011), YBNL (2012), Eyan Mayweather (2015), The Glory(2016), Lagos Nawa(2017) and a recent EP named 999(2020). He has won notable awards including, Nigerian Entertainment Awards for Album of the year and Rap Act of the year, The Headies award 2015 for Artist of the year, Best indigeneous artiste among others.

2. Falz:


Folarin Falana popularly known by his stage name Falz is a new generational rapper who has the fluid of words running through his veins, making him spit out hot lyrical vibes. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called ‘The School Boys” with his friend before he professionally started doing music in the year 2009.

Falz was well known after his song ‘Marry me’ featuring Yemi Alade. He has been up and doing in making good music ever since. He describes his style of music as ‘Wahzup music’ which is fusion of comic lyrics with contemporary hip-hop in a faux Yoruba accent. He has won numerous awards like, the 2016 City people entertainment awards under the category of Album of the year, Best afro hip hop video, Best Rap single, Best rap album e.t.c

3. M. I

M. I

Jude Abaga who is professionally known as Mr. Incredible (M.I) is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and record producer. He was the C. E. O of Chocolate city from June 2015 to 2019 then after announced his exit from chocolate city music and launched his own record label incredible music.

He rose to stardom in 2006 when he dropped a single ‘Crowd mentality’ and became popular in Jos,in his home town. From that time till date, M. I has been hitting the music scene back to back. He has released rap albums like Talk about it(2008), M.I 2: The Movie (2010), The Chairman (2014) A study on self worthDxnl (2018) and also EPs like Judah(2020), The live report with AQ (2020). M. I has so many awards to his name like The Headies Award 2018 in the category of best rap single and lyricist on the role among others.

4. Phyno:


Chibuzo Nelson Azubike popularly known as Phyno is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter,and a record producer who is at his best in delivering good music. The artiste got his stage name Phyno from high school friends which was derived from the word Phenomenal.

Most times, having an interest in a particular craft starts at a tender age, for Phyno, he developed an interest for music production during his secondary school days, he initially wanted to be a pilot but as fate had it,he became one of the best celebrated artistes currently. He started professionally as a producer in 2003 and his rapping in Igbo. Ever since then,he has dropped hit singles.

Phyno believes the elements of music makes it borderless. He raps in Igbo language because he respects his culture and love being himself, though he also includes pidgin and English in his lyrics. He has won awards as follows, Nigerian Entertainment awards, City people Entertainment awards e.t.c

5. Vector:


Olanrewaju Ogunmekun popularly known as vector is a Nigerian rapper and songwriter who is good at playing with words and making them meaningful. He released his first single ‘kilode’ from the album state of surprise in February 2010.

Back then in 1999, Vector formed a duo called Badder Boiz,they wrote their own songs and in the same year,they started performing at shows as trio. After some time, they splited.

He has dropped hit singles and made good videos. These have won him awards like The Headies award under the category of the lyricist on the roll and Best rap single, Nigerian music video awards under the category of best afro hip hop single.
