Saying this song rang a bell is simply an understatement. Ten years ago, 19-year-old Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid stamped his name on the sand of time with the release of his first single titled “Holla At Your Boy”.
How time flies! As that ‘young new dude’ of yesterday is currently one of the most successful musicians in Nigeria, with his smooth tuned western-infused lyrics and beats.

Indeed, “Holla At Your Boy” was a perfect introduction of Wizkid to the Music Industry, by his former label boss Banky W. The song brought a fresh sound to the scene and became an instant hit, winning the heart of Music lovers worldwide.

“Holla At Your Boy” became a sensation immediately after its release, and played a major part in the singer’s rise to stardom.

The single recorded in 2009 was produced by DJ Klem (Knighthouse) and Vebee, from the Album "Superstar" released on the 2nd of January 2010, under the singer's former record label. Emirates Mate Empire (E.M.E). Owned by Banky W.

The song which had 2 verses and a chorus was a fusion of African and Western beats, better known as Afropop.
Wizkid & Ice Prince

This made the song unique and entirely different from what we’ve been listening to as at that time.

The lyrics were organized and written in an engaging plot style that developed from the first verse till the end.

The song started with the singer introducing himself and giving shout to the song producer and his record label, the ‘usuals’.

The Storyline:
Let’s Throw A Little Glance At This

In the first verse of the song, the singer was basically talking to a girl he liked and think likes him too because, he had seen her staring at him for a while and was telling the girl how special he is, probably to make the girl see reasons to be with him.

Well, we good go on and on with the narration, but that won’t make it to be a ‘glance’ anymore. Sure, the memories of the video scenes are already spinning right?

The song was a hit and earned wizkid alot of accolades such as 'Best Pop Single' at the Headies 2011 and a strong and large fan base in Africa.

The story of Wizkid from start to present is one enviable. He currently owns his own Record label’ Star Boy Record, and his reach is continuously spreading beyond the boundaries of Africa to the International sphere.

On a lighter note, Wizkid looked cuter and sweeter in that video though. ‘Old age’ is gradually creeping right?😂

He remains the one and only ‘Star BOY’ though and we look forward to more exploits from him.

Do have a beautiful Thursday from all of us at Afrobeats 360

  1. I think wizkid is following d same footpath as 2face. His continuity is on point as we have not gotten tired of him unlike some.

  2. I remember this song, it was just a hit. I still love it till now even after all the years. 10 years already? Wow

  3. I think I prefer his old songs to the recent ones. “Holla At Your Boy” “Say My Name” the other one he sang for his mother or so. Those were the real moments
