What Really Happened to Nigeria’s Biggest Music Shows?

Remember those times when you tried to make it to your tv by 7pm every Sunday, just to see talented Nigerians sing their hearts out? There was a peak period around 2013 and 2014 where you had to choose between watching MTN Project Fame, Nigerian Idol, Nigeria’s Got Talent, GLO’s X-Factor Nigeria and lest I forget, Star Quest. There was enough entertainment on our screens.

Sadly, GLO’s X-Factor never got renewed for a new season after its first winner, Dj Switch. Nigerians got consolation in the other music programs which was joined by The Coca Cola Artist Lounge. With time, the Star Quest Show left our screens and Nigerian Idol followed suit.

This was quite harder to handle because the Nigerian show had produced big stars like Timi Dakolo, Omawunmi and Mercy Chinwo. It did seem, at that point, that there was a dwindle in Nigerian Tv as the other shows started wrapping up.

MTN Project Fame did seem like it was here to stay. After 8 seasons, it was finally joined by The voice Nigeria. We had one blissful year before NEWS of MTN Pulling out of Project Fame West Africa rocked our world. Nigerians with dreams of making it on a music show, had just one option, The Voice Nigeria.

While the show was renewed for another season in 2018, there hasn’t been any news on a third season. All hope is not lost yet as there hasn’t been an official news of Airtel withdrawing sponsorship from the show.

Will we get a new season or will one of the past music shows rise again? We’ll just have to wait and see.
