2019 was a great year for naija music. We were served banger to banger, the singles, the collabs, the EP’s, the albums.
There was great music and there were great dance steps to match, zanku, gbese, tesumole, leg work, everyone was digging it and all the parties were lit!
In the light of #TBT, let’s remember the biggest collabos of 2019.
Many artists went international, bringing us good music along with stars such as Beyonce, Damien Marley, Popcaan and Chris Brown among others.
It was also the year of the “boys” as Boy Ox, Burna Boy, Joeboy and of course, Fireboy thrilled us and we vibed to them all year long.
There was even a collabo album from Sarz and Wurld, which was divine!
Lets take a trip down the not so distant memory lane and remember the hits of 2019 in no particular order.
Risky- Davido ft Popcaan
The genesis of the song is a bit hilarious. Most music lovers have seen a video of Davido freestyling on Shade 45, Sirus XM radio channel and there was an unspoken consensus that the freestyle was a FLOP.
Not for Davido however, as he turned his famous “kilo kan mi? I’m making money” line into a hit song with the Jamaican DJ, Popcaan.
Agege- Tekno, Zlatan
The video to this song is the reason Alhaji Tekno was termed “a threat to national security and a bad influence on Nigerian youths” by NCAC.
The Pana crooner collaborated with Zlatan to bring us this hit along with a bold video which almost landed him in jail. I daresay it was worth it!
Brown Skin Girl – Beyonce, SAINt JHN, Wizkid & Blue Ivy Carter
Being on the same song as Beyonce is pretty much big a deal as it can get, and that is exactly what Starboy did.
Wizkid gave an afro vibe to the song which featured Blue Ivy Carter and SAINt JHN. Brown Skin Girl was released as a part of Beyonce’s The Gift album where she worked with other African artists like Burna Boy, Shatta Wale, Tiwa Savage, Tekno and Yemi Alade.
Doyin- Mr Eazi & Simi
Mr Eazi and the very talented Simi brought us this wonderful love song in August 2019.
It had the most beautiful visuals and Simi was absolutely sensational as she thrilled us with her unique soprano.
Am I a Yahoo Boy- Naira Marley, Zlatan
On the 3rd of May 2019, Naira Marley and Zlatan released Am I a Yahoo Boy and what followed can only be termed “a series of unfortunate events.”
After the release of this song, a video of Ruggedman calling out Naira M. for supporting fraud went viral and Naira responded by mocking Ruggedman on instagram, then the unexpected happened.
On the 10th of May 2019, Naira Marley and Zlatan were picked up by the EFCC among others which included popular Instagram personality, Gucci Branch. They were accused of fraud and Marlians clamoured for the release of their president.
Eventually, the EFCC let Naira Marley, Zlatan and others go. Their arrest had a positive impact on their career as it gained them popularity. Am I a Yahoo Boy was one of the biggest songs of 2019.
Gum Body- Burna Boy feat. Jorja Smith
Burna Boy, had a great 2019, with his album African Giant doing exceptionally well, his Grammy nomination and his many international collaborations.
Gum Body is one of the songs from the African Giant album where he features Jorja Smith. The video is sizzling and wonderfully executed, typical of Oluwaburna.
Sweet in the middle- Davido ft. Wurld, Naira Marley, Zlatan
Davido came with the big guns on this song from his A Good Time album. he had everyone going “sweet in the middle.”
The video was star studded as we saw our favourite stars, the Marlian president, Naira M., Zlatan Ibile and the sensational Wurld.
Blow My Mind- Davido & Chris Brown
2019 was Davido’s year for collaborations as he teamed up with Chris Brown to actually blow all of our minds.
The banger was paired with a very colourful visual and was totally a vibe.
Low- Larry Gaaga ft. Wizkid
Larry Gaaga sure knows who to partner with for a good song and he proved that by giving us Low with Wizkid.
The video of the song is so pleasing to look at, with its majorly white background. It is also a romantic song and a generally accepted hit.
Gelato- DJ Cuppy ft. Zlatan
This song has a bit of an intersting backstory as it was inspired by a video of DJ Cuppy’s bilionaire dad saying “gelato”
Zlatan, king of adlibs, joined DJ Cuppy to ask us who our daddy is in a playful video. The song did undeniably well.
Mafo- Naira Marley, Young John
In this inspirational song, Naira M. has teamed up with producer Young John to deliver a very important message, “Mafo“.
Mafo which translates to “dont break” makes you want to get up and throw the baddest zanku.
The video presents the Marlian president to us with a touch of class and the video vixens are smoking hot, literally.
Bolanle- IVD ft Zlatan
Most people dont know that when Zlatan was promoting this song, he took a lady named Bolanle out for dinner, and even gifted her a 750k naira designer purse. According to Bolanle, Zlatan is “sweet inside out” and that must be true because he so generously blessed us with this banger.
In this crisp video, Bolanle is encouraged to pepper all of us and automobile big boy who made his debut into the music scene with this song, IVD totally concurs.
I Love Girls with Troub (EP)l- Sarz, Wurld
This entire EP was a Sarz and Wurld collaboration that was entirely sensational. from Prisona to Troubl to the Nobody Wins Interlude and ending with Sade, this EP in my opionion is one of the best collaborations of 2019. Each sing holds you captive and is so well executed by Wurld and his rich, beautiful voice.
The videos give us dapper men, Sarz and Wurld and is simply thrilling.
There were so many other collabos that made waves and it would totally be unfair to leave them out. Some of which include:
Dont Call Me Back- Joeboy & Mayorkun
Secret- Burna Boy, Jeremih & Serani
Causing Trouble- DJ Tunez feat. Oxlade
Totori- Olamide, Wizkid, ID Cabasa
Location- Dave ft. Burna Boy
Own it- Stormzy feat. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy
Gbeku- Zlatan feat. Burna Boy
Greed- Jinmi Abduls & Oxlade
At the end of the day, 2019 was a good year and we have high hopes for 2020 collab.
