Throw back Thursday: “The ones wey blow in a blink of an eye, they disappear”

The Nigeria music industry practically and best explains the statement ‘soldier go,soldier come but barrack still remain’ . Over the years, we have had different artists rock our Nigeria music world at one time or the other, but before you know it, we do not get to hear much about them again. And you sometimes wonder where they have been? probably because you just remembered one of their songs or heard it play on the radio. Then you say: ‘na my song that year be this o’
Since today is a Thursday and it is a day when most of us share old memories, we here at afrobeats360 have decided to take you back a little ( is not like we can’t go backer than this oo ) but let’s start from here. In this article, we have come up with names of some artists that rocked our playlist at one time or the other and we are asking “where are they now?
Please note that this article is not in anyway throwing shade, rather it is just a way of re-living old memories and making these artists know that at one time or the other, they made Nigeria music lovers feel some type of way. As some of their songs were our personal favorite back then.

  1. Mo’Cheddah

Can someone tell me where Modupe-Oreoluwa Oyeyemi Ola known better as Mo’Cheddah (sometimes stylized as Mocheeda or Mocheddah )is, and what she has been up to lately? I mean you will agree with me that her debut studio album, “Franchise Celebrity” released in 2010 was fire. Songs like “if you want me” and “Ko ma roll” were always requested for by music listeners back then. She was one female artiste that held it down for hip-hop in Nigeria and we loved every bit of it. We still do. Anyway, last we heard about her, was that she has channeled all the energy into her fashion business and she recently got married to her long time boy friend and best friend in 2018. Somebody please tell “Mocheeda diva mo lenu” that we have really missed her and she can just surprise us with even a single and we will be very grateful.

  1. Terry G

“Testing microphone eeeh
Terry G testing microphone eeh
oya start to joli e e o lord ehh…”

Akpako master AKA terrygzus is certainly one artiste that made many Nigerians lose their ‘home training’, especially with his ‘freemadness’ track that had Part 1 and 2. Mehn! He’s such a vibe and was one of the pioneers of the street pop genre of the afrobeat sound. But the question is where is the ‘Ginjah master’ and his bell?
Well, don’t think it too much or you fit run mad pass Terry g when you run mad . Terry genius as he likes to be called now is still very much into music. In case you didn’t know, his recent release was in 2019 titled “Koleto” (Not Good Enough).

  1. Naeto C

I feel like we all did not get the Memo from his song, where he was telling us that “levels don change na Dem no fit stop me again…” This is because each time Naeto C is being interviewed he still keeps it a ten over ten, even if it’s been a while he recorded a song. I guess levels really changed for him but we all thought it was just a hook to one of our favorite song back then. So not releasing songs is really no big deal to this Nigerian rapper that stole our music heart with his lyrics and good looks, as he is now into other things that keeps him levelled up.

  1. Chuddy K

He is one artiste that could really sing and vibe but we tend to forget him when listing artists that held it down at one time or the other, even if his was for a short time. His single ‘slow slow’ was a jam and a half and it can still get you in the mood even now. When he released ‘Gaga crazy’, Nigerian music lovers literally went crazy. I remember one particular season of the popular “Maltina Family dance hall”, many families danced to Chuddy K’s ‘Gaga crazy’ as a ticket to get into the house. Where is he now? Well, he said he had to sacrifice his music career to become a good father to his new born twins and promised that he would be back. This was in an interview with ‘PunchNg’ some few years back. Dear Chuddy K, we will be glad to have you back in the industry,as your talent and experience will go a long way in improving the industry.

  1. D’ prince

“Who am I
Who am I
Who am I”

Omoba aYoruba word that translates to son of the king in English, which means prince is what we all know him as. And it is also the title of one of his song that was nominated for ‘hottest single of the year’ in the 2010 ‘Nigeria entertainment awards’. With other hit singles like ‘Take banana’ and ‘Give it to me’, D’prince is definitely one artist that rocked the music industry at one point in time. In 2015 he released a track called ‘Oga titus’ and later in 2017 he dropped ‘gucci gang’ that had his brother Donjazzy and Davido on it. But these days he is more into giving younger artiste a platform to shine and grow as he was the one who discovered the rave of the moment ‘Rema’, who is co-signed to D’prince’s record label ‘Jonzing world’ and ‘Mavin records’.

  1. Iyanya

Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, known by his stage name Iyanya, is a Nigerian Musician and performer that rocked the music industry so hard in 2012/2013. He rose to fame after winning the first season of Project Fame West Africa and is best known for his hit single “Kukere”.He co-founded the record label Made Men Music Group with Ubi Franklin in 2011. He released his debut studio album My Story in 2011. Desire, his second studio album, contained

five singles (3hits and two bangers): “Kukere”, “Ur Waist”, “Flavour”, “Sexy Mama”, and “Jombolo”. Little wonder he won the Artist of the Year award at The Headies 2013. Set awon body built ati waist whyner In October 2016, Iyanya announced on Instagram that he signed a record deal with Mavin Records.Few months prior, he signed a management deal with Temple Management Company. He first announced his intentions to leave Made Man Music Group in July 2016. Well he’s still very much around in the industry as every now and then he still does something for the fans.

  1. May D

Akinmayokun Awodumila popularly known as May D, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and dancer. He was formally signed to the R&B duo P-Square record label “Square records”.He rose to stardom in the same year he got signed to the label 2011, where he was featured on the duo’s hit song ‘chop my money’.
On 13 May 2011 he released his first single “SoundTrack” a very controversial track under Square records. On the 21 August 2012 it was officially announced that the Pop singer “May D” is no longer in the label, as stated by Premium Times news. This made him establish an independent record known as Confam Entertainment. Whether the name of this record had to do anything with it I don’t know but you and I know that May D released confirm songs like Ile-ijo, ‘gat me high’, ‘use me’, ‘ur eyes’ featuring Davido to mention but a few. His most recent song ‘Dada’ was released past year.

  1. Sean Tizzle

He needs no introduction, as he was a fan favorite in the 2013/2014 era. He even won the ‘next rated’ act at the headies award ceremony where he was up against Grammy nominee Burnaboy, Phyno,Dammykrane and Seyi Shay in 2013. His first single ‘Sho le’ was a monster hit and a street anthem back then. If you make a list of albums of this past decade (2010-2019), Sean’s album “The Journey” will definitely be on top five. Sadly, things started to go sour for this ‘apple of the music industry’s eyes’ when rumors of him having too much pride, skin bleaching and other controversial statements, started making the rounds and fans decided to turn a blind eye and play deaf to anything Sean Tizzle.
As to is where about, we know for sure that Sean Tizzle is Still very much present in the industry as he recently dropped a project titled ‘Moving Forward’. One thing we can say about this project is that it is ‘mad o’. Sean Tizzle is a raw talen, with the music still flowing in his system. But in this music business, talent is not everything.

  1. Korede Bello

The first time most of us heard that monster hit ‘dorobucci’ by Mavin all stars, we immediately started searching for who ‘doro African prince doro’ is. Fast forward to the release of another jam by Mavin (Adaobi) featuring their latest signings at the time (Reekado banks, Dija and Korede Bello), we started to fall head over heels for this new talent in the industry. And when he eventually released what most of us will refer to as his greatest single yet,we loved him even more. He himself knew that even the devil couldn’t stop the love we had for him. Little wonder he titled this jam of his ‘Godwin’.

Godwin was played back to back on every radio station and topped many countdown charts for weeks. Churches performed this song during Sunday service. Mad o! And that’s how you know that you have blown. He’s still signed to ‘Mavin records’ even if artists that were signed at the same time he was signed are no more with ‘Mavin records’.

  1. Lil kesh

“Skibo robo skibo robo skibo
Yeeba Ooshey baddest”

Every single was a hit. From ‘lyrically’, to ‘Efe joku’, to ‘shoki’. Mr ‘young and getting it’ always had a way of making us put on our dancing shoes. He was the rave of the moment as regards street music set awon ibile gang. Many of us still haven’t come to terms with the fact that he did not win the ‘next rated’ award in 2016. Lilkesh is very much around in the industry as he still puts out music every now and then and was featured on one of the biggest songs of 2018 ‘Able God’.

Many of these artists are very much around except from a few that have finally called it quit, but the thing is the tempo and style of the afrobeat music just keeps evolving by the second and new kids are coming into the game every single day. So it is very difficult for one artists to be on top for a very long time except from a few of them that have broken this curse.
Feel free to mention some other names in the comment section that gave you goosebumps at one point in time but you don’t hear much from them anymore.
