The 62nd annual Grammy awards ceremony was held on January 26, 2020 at the Staples center in Los Angeles. The event, hosted by Alicia Keys saw a display of celebrities from all over the world.
It was a suspense filled night, especially for Nigerians who were anticipating Burna’s win. However, it wasn’t a smooth ride for our African Giant, Burnaboy who was nominated in the category of world music album for the acclaimed “African Giant”.
Other nominees in this category include: Altin Gün , Bokanté, Metropole Orkest, Angelique Kidjo, Nathalie Joachim and Spektral.
In all, Angelique Kidjo won in the category, making it her fourth Grammy win, as our Burna still awaits his first.
Angelique Kidjo, while dedicating the award showered praises on Burnaboy saying
“Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generation of Artists coming from Africa are going to take you by storm, and the time has come. This is for Burnaboy”
she further commended Burnaboy, among the young artists who come from Africa, changing the way our continent is seen and the way African music is the bedrock of every other.
Grammy nominations here and there? Yes! But for the actual win, Burnaboy’s victory would have made it the second time a Nigerian would be returning home with the Grammys after the Legendary Sikiru Adepoju who was the first Nigerian to have won a Grammy in the year 2009.
It’s 11 years already, ever since the first win, making it the more reason why Burna’s win meant a lot to many.
The Grammy always mean a lot to all, in different beautiful ways.
Although a sad one, being a nominee is a feat on its own, and we are definitely proud of Burna for how far he has come thus far.
We however, look forward to seeing more and more Nigerian artistes become not just nominees but also bring home the crown in the nearest future.
Congratulations To All Winners
